Blog Post: Embracing Mahjong: The Mahjong Social Club's Journey and Offerings
Discovering Mahjong
For many, Mahjong is more than a game- it's a timeless tradition that fosters connection and community. Originating in China hundreds of years ago, Mahjong made its way to America in the 1920s and has experienced several resurgences since then. The latest surge in popularity came during 2020 when people sought meaningful ways to connect with family and friends from home. As Courtney Wilson and Heather Duncan of the Mahjong Social Club in Tulsa explain, it's a game for all ages, from 9 to 99.
The beauty of Mahjong lies in its blend of strategy and creativity. As Heather aptly describes, it's like taking a set of tiles and organizing chaos. Players match their tiles to one of thousands of winning combinations, making each game a new mental puzzle and a source of joy.
The Mahjong Social Club's Beginnings
Courtney Wilson founded the Mahjong Social Club in July 2023, starting with events and parties in Tulsa. The response was overwhelming as friends and community members were eager to learn the game. This led Courtney to pivot and prioritize beginner lessons, partnering with Heather to expand the club's teaching and offerings. Now co-owners, the duo delights in sharing their passion for Mahjong. Heather says, it's a blessing to do something you love and help people learn a game that we want to keep playing.
Lessons and Experiences
The Mahjong Social Club offers beginner lessons at $80 per person for a 2 to 2.5-hour session. These sessions cover tile basics, suits, and gameplay, helping participants navigate their first two games with guidance. For those who want to dive deeper, follow-up lessons and guided play sessions are available.
Girl's weekends and events at Carlton Landing have become a favorite for the club. From bachelorette parties to community gatherings, Courtney and Heather bring Mahjong to life, complete with travel-friendly sets and optional card tables. Lake Stay at Carlton Landing even rents Mahjong sets for guests, making the game a seamless addition to any getaway. The Lodge is soon to add a set for your playing enjoyment as well!
Mahjong for Every Personality
One unique aspect of Mahjong is the variety of tile sets available. As ambassadors for The Mahjong Line, Courtney and Heather introduce their students to a range of aesthetically pleasing and functional tiles. From traditional designs to whimsical themes like botanicals, mountains, or cheeky patterns, there's a set to match every player's personality.
Heather notes, the tiles are like pieces of art, and the lucite boxes they come in are perfect for display. For those who fall in love with a particular set, the club offers discounts through their ambassador link.
A Growing Community
The Mahjong Social Club is more than just lessons. It's about fostering a community. With regular events, competitive leagues, and even matching team uniforms, Courtney and Heather ensure that Mahjong remains a vibrant and inclusive activity.
For those interested in hosting larger gatherings, the club facilitates tournaments and fundraisers, complete with prizes and expert guidance. "We love seeing people connect through this game", Heather shares.
